How to Save Conway in Borderlands 4 (Null and Void Quest)

Borderlands 4 has a boatload of side quests, and some of them even continue the story of key characters even after the main mission is all wrapped up. Null and Void is a similar side mission that lets players help the Outbounders leave Kairos using the ship that Timekeeper’s army used to attack them. The side quest involves players locating the missing pilot, Conway. Here’s how to track down Conway via their Echo logs and save them from an untimely demise into the void.

How to Start the Null and Void Side Quest in Borderlands 4

The Null and Void side quest unlocks once players complete the sixth main mission, Rush the Gate, and defeat Idolator Sol in Borderlands 4. Once the boss is gone and the Outlanders have survived an attack by the Timekeepers, you can return to Launchpad faction town to talk to Rush.

Rush will reveal his plan for using the crashed attack ship and use it to escape Kairos. However, his trusted pilot, Conway, is nowhere to be seen and requests the players to track them down. This will start the side quest Null and Void in Borderlands 4, where players will need to find where Conway is and bring them back to Outlanders.

Track Conway's Location via Echo Logs

After accepting the Null and Void mission, they’ll need to reach Conway’s last location. The first location you’ll come across is the Wreck of the Nostalgia. It’ll be infested with Rippers, so make sure to eliminate them as you reach for the quest objective. Conway’s hideout will be empty, but players will find the first Echo Log near her bed.

Similarly, you’ll need to reach the next location to look for Conway, and you’ll find another Echo Log near her reconnaissance location. This echo log will reveal Conway’s last location, which will be a Ripper’s hideout. So, reach the location marked by the quest marker, and you’ll be ambushed by a lot of enemies. Carefully make your way to the large door to begin the next section of the quest.

Retrieve & Deliver Hangry Ripper's Takeout Order

The Ripper’s leader, Chugs, will speak to players through the intercom on the door, mistaking them for the takeout delivery person. So, they won’t let you in unless you fetch the missing food order for the Hangry Rippers. So, now you’ll need to follow the quest marker to arrive at a beach and find the crashed delivery vehicle, with takeout boxes scattered on the sand. Collect ten takeout boxes and return to the intercom door with the Hangry Ripper’s food order.

The door will be opened, and you’ll be prompted to place the ordered items on a table in front of you. However, things will turn dangerous quickly as they’ll quickly turn on you for delivering the food order late, leading to a showdown with the Hangry Rippers.

Keep fighting the Hangry Rippers until you’ve eliminated most of them. Reach the back of the area to find Conway trapped in a locked cell. However, the meeting will be cut short by a crane arm picking up the cell and transporting it to another location. This will start the last section of the Null and Void quest in Borderlands 4.

How to Save Conway from the Void

After following the locked cell, it’ll stop over a large void portal with Conway’s life literally hanging in the balance. Now take down the enemies around the portal, and you’ll need to find the crane controls to bring Conway down.

There’s a crane just opposite to Conway’s cell, but the crane operator will pounce down to pick a fight with you. The crane operator, Erector Ed, will throw metal pipes at you and unleash a ground-pound when you get too close. So, make sure to maintain a safe distance and take him down using ranged weapons like SMGs or ARs.

Once the crane operator is defeated, go around the side of the large crane, and you’ll spot a ladder leading up. After reaching the top, flip the switch to try and move the cage away from the void portal. However, the cage won’t move, so instead you’ll need to re-route the implosion drive’s power to take away the energy powering the void portal.

To do this, you’ll find the first valve near the locked cage. Simply interact with it, and now you’ll need to find the other valve to complete the energizing starboard engine objective.

There’s a door to the left of Conway’s cage that you can enter through to reach the other side of the area. You’ll find another valve to turn here, which will complete re-routing the power to the starboard engine.

Now, grapple with the upper platform to the right, and you’ll spot a switch on the center console. Flip the switch to complete the re-routing process and shut down the void portal underneath Conway’s cell.

While the danger of sending an Outbounder’s pilot to the abyss has been warded off, the leader of the Hangry Rippers, Chugs, will come out to confront the players. Defeating Chugs will be easy, as you’ll need to find gaps within his shield to inflict damage. If you have a shotgun, you can shoot the orbs powering the shield to make it explode.

Once Chugs is defeated, Conway will be released from her cell, and the rest of the Outbounders will show up as well. This will complete the Null and Void side quest in Borderlands 4, and reward players with an SMG, cash, and a cool new cosmetic skin: Vault Hunter Style (Out of Bounds).
